It's Not MY Kid Linn County is a media campaign based on a 2008 survey of Linn County, Iowa, parents and their attitudes about underage drinking and drug use. The goal is to to educate parents about what kids say is happening in Linn County.
In 2008, Linn County Partnership on Substance Abuse (LCPSA) commissioned Vernon Research Group to survey Linn County parents with children age 11 through 17 and test assumptions about their attitudes and opinions about alcohol and marijuana use (the two most commonly used illegal drugs among youth in Linn County). This data, in combination with data from the Iowa Youth Survey, is being presented in the form of a media campaign targeted to parents to help them understand how they can help prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth in Linn County.
Guided by members of LCPSA, who represent a variety of sectors engaged in youth substance abuse prevention efforts, the Vernon Research Group created a survey instrument and used the Iowa's Opinion Panel to collect data. More than 1,100 individuals responded to the survey; however, just over 400 met eligibility criteria. Vernon Research Group then analyzed and reported the data to Partnership members and facilitated two focus groups of Linn County parents to collect additional data on survey findings and messaging for a broad-based campaign.
